Is Madrid safe?

As far as safe can be, Madrid is considered a safe city for Tourists. However, like any major urban area, it has its share of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, especially in crowded tourist areas. It’s definitely nothing compared to visiting London and all the knife crimes that plague the city. Nevertheless, I suggest observing the following precautions to ensure all your belongings (including your life) are safe during your stay. I put some of these to practice myself and it worked for me:

  1. Watch Your Belongings: Be vigilant in crowded places, public transportation, and tourist hotspots to prevent pickpocketing. Use a money belt or a secure bag for your valuables.
  2. Stay in Well-Lit Areas: At night, stick to well-lit and busy streets. Avoid poorly lit or deserted areas, especially if you’re alone.
  3. Use Reputable Transportation: Stick to licensed taxis and official transportation services. Be cautious of unlicensed or unofficial taxis.
  4. Be Cautious with Strangers: While Madrid is generally safe, exercise caution when approached by strangers. Be wary of unsolicited offers of help or services.
  5. Emergency Numbers: Familiarize yourself with the local emergency numbers, including 112 (the European emergency number), in case you need assistance.
  6. Safety in Numbers: When exploring the city at night, it’s often safer to be in a group, especially if you’re in less familiar areas. I made friends with a few other Tourists pretty quickly within my first day in Madrid and this came in handy.
